Glimpses of Jesus 39

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is continuing the series on the Servant.

To be honest as I read today's passage I was thinking maybe I should have used last week's response for this week.  Only then my attention was drawn to ‘For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground’ Isaiah 52:2 and the contrast between a tender shoot and the violent list that follows.

The next double pages in my journal already had some paint on.  Painted string was placed between the two pages and the pages pressed together.

I painted a thin layer of gesso on the page I was planning to use, leaving the what looks like chaotic scribble showing through.  I liked the idea of the chaos behind the image that I was about to put on.

With a pale green acrylic paint I printed a grass seedhead onto the page using a Thermofax screen.

I had squeezed out too much paint so I spread that over the next page.

I put a wash of watercolour over the page when the acrylic was dry.  I wanted to make it look like parched earth so while the watercolour paint was wet I sprinkled sea salt over it and left it to dry.

The finished result didn't look particularly parched.

I stamped lightly over the page with brown ink and a stamp.  I printed out the words from the passage on Kraft paper, cut them up and stuck them on my page.

Scavenger Hunt 2016 final post

I went off the boil a bit with the Scavenger hunt.  I did so well in June and July and then I forgot about it.  So many other things going on.

So here are the last three that I have from the list
4 A book or magazine read during 2016

8 A drawing, art project etc created by you

21 A photograph of you with a newspaper or calendar page from the time period covered in the hunt

I didn't manage to get #17 - twins or #20 - someone laughing.  I managed alternative 1 but not alternative 2: a baby

All in all though, I am satisfied with how I got on.  Maybe if it happens again next year I will do better.

Glimpses of Jesus 38

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about The Servant's Mission in Isaiah 50:4-9 which talks about the suffering that will be inflicted.

I used this startling piece of clipart I found on Microsoft Publisher and added the crown of thorns which was also in Publisher although I did remove the eyes which were part of the design.

50 ways to leave your layer

Warning: there are a lot (and I mean a lot!) of photos in this post.

Last weekend I went to Art from the Heart in Harrogate for a weekend of two workshops led by Seth Apter.

The workshop on Saturday was '50 ways to leave your layer'.  We were given a Dylusions square journal and did one technique for each double page.  Some technique pages had more than one layer!

Smooshing - a type of monoprinting

Smooshing with others!   This works so much better with the black background rather than the white above.

Printing with texture

Splatter

Hidden background

Subtraction stencilling

Water splats!

Brayered

Two colours

Ombre

Free choice of techniques to do the cover.

On Sunday we did 'Mixed Media Mashup'.  We made one finished piece to take home using a variety of techniques following Seth's instructions.

My piece went from this first layer:

to this:

And in between were these layers:

Die cuts using Seth's Spellbinder Dies.

Auditioning the pieces

Improvements after advice from Seth

Added finishing touches

It was a fabulous full on weekend.  Thank you Seth.  Thanks to Art from the Heart for organising it and to my friend Carolyn who joined me for the weekend.

Well done if you've got this far.  I did warn you there were a lot of photos.

Glimpses of Jesus 37

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about The Servant: Israel and the Nations in Isaiah 49:1-13

I kep this journal page very simple - if not simplistic.  I used clipart found in Microsoft Publisher and added some words.

Plucking up courage or an ExTex update

I told you in my last post about ExTex 5 about the long print I made.  I used a long piece of brown packaging paper, acrylic paints, my own stamps and some dye.

Kim had suggested I ironed some lightweight interfacing on the back and cut it into 6 pieces.   It took me a while to pluck up the courage to even iron the interfacing on.  But I did.

And then I cut it into six pieces.  This makes them a peculiar size.  Just something else to deal with.

Then I was a bit stuck with no idea what to do next.  I can sort of see the big picture of the end result but not quite how to get there.  So I decided to take each photo and manipulate the image.  Here's just one of the set of images on an A4 sheet of paper.

I did something similar with each original photo.  Then I got together some paper torn out of a book of sea poems, some fabrics previously painted in similar colours to those in the photos above, a marine chart and two stamps I previously made of seabirds.  Before I started auditioning bits for small collages on top of the backgrounds, I cut the original pages down a bit.

Still lots more work to do.  Sorting out the collages and how to fix them.  Then stitching!  Probably hand stitching but maybe I'll pluck up more courage and use the sewing machine as well.

I am currently thinking these pages will become a zigzag book but who knows

Glimpses of Jesus 36

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is the start of a series on the Servant Songs in Isaiah.

I found it quite hard to think of a creative response to the first post but in the end decided to make an acrostic based on the word SERVANT.

The next page in my journal looked like this from where I had cleaned a stencil off into the book.

I decided to put a wash of blue watercolour paint over the page and put crinkled clingfilm on the top and waited for it to dry.

The result was better than I expected.

I put washi tape around the edges to form a border.

I found some letters I liked and tested them by putting them on the ruler to see if they would fit the page.

I wrote the rest of the word for each letter.  I chose words that I felt represent Jesus and his character.
