Glimpses of Jesus 35

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about Jesse, the father of David in Isaiah 11.

I took a photograph of some artwork I did many years ago using crumpled and painted tissue paper based on the Tree of Jesse.  In Publisher I put the Isaiah 11:1 verse on top and printed it out and stuck the whole page into my journal.

ExTex 5 update

Last weekend was our third session together on the Experimental Textiles course.

Between sessions I had done some Session 2 homework.  I experimented with the stamps I had made on my gelli plate.  They didn't really work out how I pictured them but they are still usable.

Then I layered the papers up and used the sewing machine to make faux chenille. The first piece was stitched in straight lines and then cut.

For the second piece I used an enlarged version of the stamp I had made.

I made myself a new pair of stamps and randomly stamped on a piece of lining paper with acrylic paint and then dyed the background.

Session 3
The weekend started with us talking about the homework we had all done and then there were short presentations about artists we liked and their use of colour.  My chosen artist was JMW Turner.  I liked that he experimented with colours and tried to use the same colours in watercolours as well as oils.   This article from the Tate was really useful for my research.

In the afternoon we looked at colour theory and mixed our own  colours onto a chart.

On Sunday we were able to have individual 'tutorials' with Kim if we wished and to spend the day playing with printing, dyeing and stitch.

I printed with the stamp I made that looks like yacht masts and sails.  I used a long piece of brown packaging paper and a limited colour palette.  I dyed the paper with some red and yellow procion dye.
It's 45 cms long and I am rather proud of it.  I have had it printed full size at Staples so that I still have the original design as I am going to chop the original into pieces in order to sew into them.

I also printed on some hymn book pages and maps.

Since the weekend I have done some more colour theory in my workbook.

I've torn up bits of my printed papers and started sewing into them - which is what I should have done for last session's homework rather than the faux chenille.

And collaged some torn up hymn book page onto the deli paper print and begun stitching.

It will be interesting to see how these finish up.

Glimpses of Jesus 34

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about the light in the darkness in Isaiah 9.

I painted the journal page with black acrylic paint.  Using Neocolor I wax oil crayons I drew the candle and wrote the words with a white Stabilo All pencil.

A grand day out

Make that two!

Last Saturday I went to the Festival of Quilts. I actually spent nearly 5 hours there.  That beats my record for staying at a show by 3 hours!  Anyway, I thought I would share some of the quilts that caught my eye.
Sea Wall Redux by Rosie Epton-Peter

Stone Wall Journal by Linda Turner

Texture & Tiles by Ursual Bowen

Landscape by Grietje van der Veen

Fragments by Judith Barker

Surface III by Isabelle Wiessler

Reflections Reflecting by Peggy Brown
There were a few map related ones as well.   Can you see the recurring themes in the quilts I chose to photograph?
Colours - the use of a limited palette
Geometry - the use of squares and rectangles without being traditional patchwork

So on to my second day out.  It was my birthday and I got to choose where we went.  I chose Winterbourne House and Garden which is quite local but we have never been.

It's hard to believe that this is so very close to the centre of the city.  It was so beautiful.

There was a print room with old printing presses and lots of printing blocks.  This is only ever open on a Friday but our visit was on Wednesday.  And it was open!

And then to top it all off there was an art exhibition which featured amongst others - Steph Redfern.

Two really lovely days out.

Glimpses of Jesus 33

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about the prophecy in Isaiah 7 regarding the birth of Jesus.

If you have followed my blog for any amount of time you will know that I rarely include pictures or photos of people in my work.  And I certainly don't draw them so today's journal page was well out of my comfort zone.

I drew first with a 6B pencil and then went over that lightly with a Stabilo All aquarelle pencil.

With a smalll brush and some clean water I went over the Stabilo pencil and dragged the brush a little to get the grey.   I stamped the word Immanuel.

ExTex session 2

Our second session of ExTex was all about printing blocks.

We made blocks with sticky back foam on coreboard from the designs we had found in the work we did in the first session.

This is Kim's photo of me making my blocks.

These are my blocks looking 'yummy' after printing with them!   I made negative and postives and mirror images of two of my designs.

Another photo by Kim of me printing with my block.

These are photos of mmy work laid out for the show and tell at the end of the two days.

We cleaned our block on wet wipes and here are some of the results.  I like some of these better than the papers and fabrics I printed.

Glimpses of Jesus 32

Glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament is a year long bible study written by Simon Clay of Jubilee Church Solihull.   You can join in at any time.

Today's post is about the marriage feast in Song of Songs 2:4   Simom links this to the the marriage supper of the Lamb in Reveleation 19:9

I used a photo from my son's UK wedding party of a table laid for a dinner party.  I added the verse from Revelation using Publisher.

Rust & Decay

Later in the year I am attending a workshop called The Poetry of Decay at The Bramble Patch.  I have no idea what photographic inspiration I will need for that but during our trip to Suffolk and Essex I took the opportunity to take lots of photographs of rust and decay.  107 actually.  However rest assured I'm not sharing all of them here.

There were lots of chains and decaying boats - so here are a few of the photos without explanation.

And my favourite - can you guess why?

And if you want to indulge yourself in rust and decay here's my Pinterest board.
